Enhancing your SEO
To many times I have heard people say i need search engine optimization and yet they really had no idea what search engine optimization really was.
An SEO Preface
To start this article I want to make sure that every reader understands that I am in no means an expert in search engine marketing. Right or wrong I tend to draw a very clear line between search engine optimization and search engine marketing.
I believe that optimization should strictly deal with methods for enhancing your site internally to better facilitate your marketing plans and strategies for your business online. So moving forward under this principle how does one enhance their search engine optimization and why is it important?
Laying a Foundation for Optimization
Many times I have found that people skip the most important steps in getting your site optimized for search engines. They tend to be far to hasty in the implementation of their site only to rush off and start a pay per click campaign that ends in bitter disgust or try and fail proper link building attempts due to the fact that no one is really interested in exchanging quality links with them.
Here are some simple steps I feel are most important for being successfully found in search engines as well as getting the most out of your money in paid campaigns.
Build Your Home Base
Have a Solid Site Structure
This point could have an entire book written about it and maybe in time I will get around to writing it but for now I will cover some of the basics.
A solid site structure actually has the ability to greatly increase your sites organic rankings all on its own. As website development progresses standard methods of development have been created to help developers create a more accessible site for both search engines as well as users. Using the right code structure and tagging will lay the proper ground work for a powerful website.
Get some consultation
As a business owner it is hard to make sure that your web development company conforms to the proper development practices that make a quality site. It may be a good idea to consult with someone you trust or make a small investment in a solid outside expert who can make sure that your website is being built properly.
Have a clear direction
Having a properly working and well laid out site can really make all the difference in your optimization efforts. You need to have a well organized site that easily identifies the reason why you want visitors to be on your site. This means that no matter what page someone is on they can still clearly understand what you are selling. Products or not you are ALWAYS selling something.
Keep your focus narrow
Give a clear message on what you are selling. As tempting as it may be to offer every service under the sun related to the business you are in creating a niche or specializing in one or a few services will really help focus your search engine optimization and marketing efforts instead of spreading your campaign so thin you tend to just disappear.
Know your competition
Researching your competition can help you build an easy task list for creating a better delivery of your product than others. When prices are comparable the business with the best display of content and user experience is going to win the sale. When researching your competition here are some things to look for:
- What resources do they use to promote products?
- Who do they affiliate and exchange links with?
- Where do they come up for relevant keywords to yours?
